Meet the Curator
The Woman Gallery is curated by Marta Mendes, whose passion for art history and women's creative contributions drives every exhibition, article, and collection featured on this site.
Marta's curatorial approach brings together both celebrated and overlooked women artists — spanning painting and photography — from the 15th century through to contemporary voices working today.
Our Vision
The gallery exists to illuminate the role of women in art, whether as creators behind the canvas or as subjects within it. By gathering self-portraits, portraits, photography, and historical profiles in one place, we aim to offer a richer, more inclusive view of art history.
Every artist featured here — from Ethel Léontine Gabain to Georgia O'Keeffe, from Joan Brown to Futaro Mitsuki — represents a thread in the larger story of women's artistic expression across centuries and movements.
Curation Philosophy
Marta believes that art history is most meaningful when it embraces the full spectrum of contributors. The Woman Gallery prioritizes thoughtful context: each profile situates the artist within her era, her influences, and the broader currents of movements such as Impressionism, Realism, Surrealism, and Modern Art.
Rather than treating women artists as a niche category, the gallery presents their work as essential to understanding the evolution of visual culture — from Victorian academicism through to contemporary photography and figurative painting.
